St Mirren have issued an apology to Hibernian midfielder Dean Shiels who was subjected to taunts during last weekend's game between the two sides at Love Street over the loss of his eye.

Shiels underwent surgery in 2006 to remove the eye, which was damaged in an accident when he was eight years old.

St Mirren have vowed to find the culprit and plan to ban the supporter from their ground.

A statement from the club read: "St Mirren wish to make an unreserved apology to Hibernian player Dean Shiels in regard to the incident involving one of our fans.

"No player should be subjected to that level of personal abuse."

General manager Brian Caldwell added: "There's an investigation ongoing. We've been talking to the police and stewards about it.

"We always encourage supporters to weed out anyone who takes part in unacceptable conduct."
