St Mirren have moved to recruit former Grimsby winger Nick Hegarty until the end of the season.

Hegarty had been without a club following his release from the Mariners, who lost their Football League status in May.

The 24-year-old spent nearly a week on trail at the Buddies, impressing manager Danny Lennon enough to earn a deal.

The move will boost Lennon after he saw deals for Swindon's Alan Gow and two further trialists collapse before signing Hegarty on transfer deadline day.

The former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday youngster made 108 first team appearances for Grimsby during a six-year spell at the club.

He was not always in the side, however, spending time on loan with Whitby Town, Willenhall Town and York City before his eventual departure from Blundell Park.

Intelligent

Lennon confirmed he was delighted to have captured the midfielder's services, especially after his long-standing interest in Gow failed to materialise.

He told the club's official website: "We played Nick in a bounce game against Kilmarnock the other week and he was up with us for a week's training in which he did very well.

"I was waiting to see where we were going with the Alan Gow situation but I couldn't wait on him forever so I'm pleased to say that we've got Nick up here and signed until the end of the season.

"Nick is an intelligent user of the ball and shows great quality from the wide left area.

"He also has a good football brain on him and he doesn't really have to get by people to put a ball in as he does things nice and early - he is exactly what we are looking for."
