Houllier: Denies contact

Gerard Houllier insists he has not been in contact regarding the Republic of Ireland job.

The former Liverpool manager has emerged as a strong contender to replace Steve Staunton at the helm following Ireland's disappointing Euro 2008 campaign.

According to French TV station Canal+, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had mentioned the Houllier link to the French Football Federation.

But Houllier, who left French champions Lyon at the end of last season, revealed he has not been in touch with the Football Association of Ireland.

"I can tell you I have not been contacted," Houllier told Canal+.

Houllier recently admitted he would be tempted by the prospect of a return to international football, having previously been coach of France.

John Aldridge told Sky Sports News on Wednesday that he would be interested in the post, while David O'Leary and Graeme Souness are also candidates for the role.
