Title favourites Marseille opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a 2-0 victory at Grenoble, while Lyon came back to draw 2-2 at Le Mans.

Mamadou Niang scored for Marseille after just two minutes against Grenoble and Benoit Cheyrou made sure of the points with ten minutes to go.

Sochaux also claimed an away victory at Auxerre, thanks to Vaclav Suerkos' 39th minute winner, as did Nice at St Etienne, with Mahamane Traore (39) and Loic Remy (88) finding the net.

AS Nancy also won away at Valenciennes after Mamadou Samassa had put the home side ahead on nine minutes.

But Floyd Ayite (20), Bakaye Traore (72) and Jonathan Brison (61) struck to give Nancy an emphatic win, while Valenciennes' night then got even worse when Nicolas Penneteau received his marching orders deep into injury time.

Two home sides won on the opening day - Nene got the only goal of the game a minute before half-time to give Monaco victory against Toulouse, while Rennes handed out a three-nil drubbing to Boulogne through Ismael Bangoura (7), Kader Mangane (45) and Jerome Leroy (90).

Former champions Lyon twice came from behind to hold Le Mans to a draw.

Modibo Maiga put the home side ahead on 21 minutes before Mathieu Bodmer equalised six minutes later.

Mathieu Coutaeur then put Le Mans back in front on 58 minutes but Lisandro Lopez earned Lyon a share of the spoils with a minute to go.

Montpellier and PSG also drew. Cyril Jeunechamp received his marching orders for a second bookable offence on 34 minutes for the home side before Ludovic Giuly put the visitors ahead in the 71st minute but Emir Spahic netted a last-gasp equaliser.

Current champions Bordeaux take on Lens on Sunday, while Lille play Lorient.
