Matuidi: Struck for St Etienne
Lyon squandered the chance to climb into the top three as St Etienne shocked Monaco.
Lyon would have moved above Lille, who drew with Nice on Saturday, if they had picked up three points away to Toulouse.
However, Toulouse kept Lyon at bay to emerge with a creditable goalless draw and further damage their opponents' title hopes.
Struggling St Etienne pulled seven points clear of the relegation zone with an impressive 3-0 victory over Monaco.
Blaise Matuidi broke the deadlock after 13 minutes before Gonzalo Bergessio made it 2-0 midway through the second half.
Emmanuel Riviere then completed the scoring in the 90th minute to bring Monaco's four-match winning run to a halt.
Marseille produced an impressive performance in the day's late game to hammer Valenciennes 5-1 and rise three places to fifth.
Lucho Gonzalez fired Marseille in front on 34 minutes and Brandao doubled their advantage just before the interval.
Benoit Cheyrou added a third eight minutes into the second half before Valenciennes reduced their arrears through Carlos Sanchez.
Mathieu Valbuena struck a fourth for Marseille with 15 minutes remaining but they were not finished there as Mamadou Niang inflicted more damage on the visitors just before the final whistle.
