Bastos: Brilliant individual performance
Sunday's action in Ligue 1 was dominated by a pair of hat-trick heroes as outstanding individual displays from Michel Bastos and Mamadou Niang propelled Lyon and Marseille to comfortable victories.
Bastos netted a first-half hat-trick as clinical Lyon moved to within five points of the top of the table thanks a superb performance at Sochaux.
A treble from Brazilian forward Bastos meant the game was all but over as a contest at the interval, with Lisandro Lopez adding a fourth in the second half.
Bastos got the visitors up and running in only the fourth minute as his left-footed free-kick skimmed along the turf, through the legs of Jean-Alain Boumsong and into the bottom corner of Teddy Richert's net.
That lead was doubled in the 23rd minute after more comedy defending by the hosts. Bafetimbi Gomis picked up the loose ball after a poor pass by Jeremie Brechet and spotted Bastos unmarked at the far post. The France international's cross was perfect and Bastos confidently dispatched his shot into the top corner.
And within a minute Bastos had completed his treble. Ederson went on a surging run down the right and his ball into the box was expertly volleyed in by Bastos to effectively end the game as a contest.
Lopez completed the scoring after the half-time interval.
A hat-trick from Niang helped Marseille move up to fourth in Ligue 1 with a comfortable victory over Nancy at the Velodrome.
Niang put OM ahead after just nine minutes but Andre Luiz quickly levelled matters for the visitors. In-form Niang put the home side back ahead just after the half-hour mark and then completed his hat-trick after the interval.
In the ninth minute Charles Kabore swung in a sweet cross from the right and Niang rose high to head home his 12th league goal of the season.
But Marseille's lead did not last long as Nancy equalised just three minutes later. Issiar Dia did well to beat Taye Taiwo down the left and his ball across the goalmouth saw Luiz complete the easy task of tapping home.
Niang then hit the crossbar as he got his head to Mathieu Valbuena's corner, but he made no mistake in the 33rd minute as Taiwo's superb delivery allowed the Senegal striker to slot home with his left foot.
Niang then completed his treble in the 66th minute thanks to an excellent through-ball from Lucho Gonzalez that allowed him to shoot into the far corner of Gennaro Bracigliano's net.
Lille stayed a point ahead of Lyon - and moved to within one of second-spotted Montpellier - as they left it late to snatch a 2-1 win at Rennes.
Jerome Leroy cancelled out Pierre-Alain Frau's opener for Lille, but substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted the winner in the 89th minute.
