David Trezeguet has expressed a desire to continue his career back in France following his departure from Hercules.

Having left Hercules earlier in the summer following their relegation from the Primera Liga, Trezeguet has been training with Monaco in recent weeks.

Monaco also dropped out of the French top flight last season and former France striker Trezeguet is keen to return to play in Ligue 1 for family reasons after spending time in Spain.

He told L'Equipe: "I made a point with my family about my situation. The conclusion is that it may be time for me to return. Today I want to return to France."

Trezeguet revealed the next club he joins would have to provide him with a worthwhile challenge.

The 33-year-old, who scored 34 goals in 71 appearances for his country, added: "What is important is to find a club that really matters to me."

Trezeguet had been linked with a move to ambitious Italian outfit Napoli last month and he admits a deal was close to being finalised.

"Napoli? I almost signed there. Napoli is an improving club that will play Champions League and we found an agreement with the chairman," he explained.

"But finally the coach changed his plans. I believe he thought I have too strong a character to accept that I would only play some matches. He didn't know me.

"I still feel fine both in my mind and body.

"On a financial level, obviously France doesn't have the same means as England, Spain or Italy. But that aspect is not the most important to me.

"I am keen to make sacrifices. The most important thing to me is to find a club that really relies on me. I have big desire to come back."

"I didn't have any proposition from Monaco. We didn't talk about that."
