Sky Sports sources understand that Sunderland are in discussions with Rennes over a move for Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan has been linked with a switch to England for much of the summer and has previously admitted that he would love to ply his trade in the Premier League.

West Ham were thought to be interested at one stage but it is Sunderland who now appear to be leading the chase for his signature

Black Cats manager Steve Bruce has been tracking the striker for some time as he looks for attacking reinforcements.

Bruce will be especially keen to sign another forward after Fraizer Campbell picked up an injury in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Manchester City which it is feared could keep him sidelined for several weeks.

Time is running out for a deal to be struck with less than 48 hours remaining until the transfer window closes, but the two clubs are believed to be in advanced talks.

If the move does go through it is expected to be a record fee for Sunderland, underlining how much Bruce admires Gyan.

He shot to prominence with a series of dazzling displays for Ghana in their march to the World Cup quarter-finals earlier this summer.

But he memorably missed a penalty in the final minute of extra-time against Uruguay as the Black Stars crashed out of the competition.
