Marseille's miserable Ligue 1 form continued as they were beaten by St Etienne and Valenciennes slipped up against Lille.

There were victories for Le Mans, Lens, Lille, Strasbourg and Rennes, while Lorient and Caen shared the points.

Marseille may have made the headlines in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night with their 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield, but they are now in the Ligue 1 relegation zone after their last-gasp defeat at St Etienne.

It looked as though the points were set to be shared until Geoffrey Dernis struck in the last minute to send his side into the top half of the table.

Lille secured their first home victory of the season as they comfortably saw off high-flying Valenciennes 3-0.

Patrick Kluivert opened the scoring from the penalty spot with just five minutes on the clock and Stephan Lichsteiner added a second before the break with Nicolas Plestan adding a third in the 67th minute.

Le Mans are up to third in the table after a 2-0 triumph over Nice, who have now lost four of their five away games this season.

The opening goal came just after the half-hour mark through Vinicius de Melo and Daisuke Matsui grabbed the second in the 61st minute.

Paris St Germain are still to win on home turf with Rennes the latest side to leave the Parc des Princes with all three points.

Jerome Leroy opened the scoring in the 19th minute for the visitors before Marcos Ceara levelled for PSG after the interval.

But goals in the last 16 minutes from Jimmy Briand and former Arsenal striker Sylvain Wiltord saw Rennes home.

Metz's miserable campaign shows no signs of improving and they remain rooted to the foot of the table after a 2-1 home defeat by Strasbourg.

Eric Mouloungui fired Strasbourg into the lead three minutes before half time and Wason Renteria doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute.

Julien Francois' goal with 27 minutes remaining gave Metz hope but they were unable to muster an equaliser.

Lens climbed out of the bottom three with a 2-0 victory over Auxerre thanks to Luigi Pieroni's 23rd minute penalty and Kader Mangane's strike 13 minutes from time.

The meeting between Lorient and Caen at Stade du Moustoir ended in stalemate with neither side able to find the target.
