St Etienne have appointed former Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin as the club's new coach.

Perrin has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract to replace Laurent Roussey, who was sacked by the Ligue 1 strugglers on Monday.

The deal will be signed on Wednesday and St Etienne chairman Bernard Caiazzo is confident Perrin is the right man for the job.

Caiazzo told AFP: "Alain Perrin made a very good impression on us.

"He comes across as someone who is very professional and experienced.

"I believe he will form a good team with Damien Comolli, our new sporting director."

Comolli was named as St Etienne's sporting director over the weekend after leaving a similar position at Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Perrin, who was in charge at Portsmouth in 2005, has been without a job since guiding Lyon to the French title last season.
