Montpellier moved top of Ligue 1 after victory at Ajaccio, with previous leaders Lyon losing their first game of the season.

Remi Garde's men came undone as they went down 1-0 at Caen. The winner came from the penalty spot through Benjami Nivet on the stroke of half-time as Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris was dismissed in the same incident.

In an action-packed match, Nivet was then red-carded on the hour, but Caen held on for the win.

Montpellier took advantage with a comfortable 3-1 win at Ajaccio.

Indeed the visitors were 3-0 up within 35 minutes, with Remy Cabella, Marco Estrada and John Utaka scoring.

Mehdi Mostefa Sbaa pulled one back early in the second half, but it was no more than a mere consolation.

Toulouse missed the chance to move level with Montpellier at the top after they drew 1-1 at St Etienne.

The Pink City outfit looked on course for victory after Franck Tabanou's first-half strike, but just a minute from time Paulao levelled for the home side.

Rennes are in third after sealing a surprising 6-2 triumph at Sochaux.

The match was level at 2-2 at the break, with Sochaux's Edouard Butlin and Modibo Maiga both grabbing equalisers after goals from Victor Montano and Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik.

In the second-half, Rennes took control with Julien Feret, Youssouf Hadji, Jires Ekoko and Montano again all scoring.

Paris Saint Germain edged a 2-1 win over Nice, with all three goals coming from the penalty spot.

The first was from Nene for the home side before Luciano Monzo replied on the hour for Nice.

Kevin Gameiro then converted from 12 yards for PSG, who finished the game with 10 men as Christophe Jallet saw red.

Lorient missed the chance to go level in third as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Auxerre.

Innocent Emeghara had given Lorient a first-half lead, but the visitors took a point thanks to Dennis Oliech's goal.

Didier Deschamps' Marseille claimed a much-needed opening victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Evian.

Loic Remy was the hero at the Stade Velodrome as he claimed a brace with a goal in each half.

b>Nancy were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Valenciennes, who grabbed a late equaliser through Renaud Cohade after Benjamin Moukandjo Bile had put the home side ahead.

Brest lost out to Dijon, who sealed a 1-0 victory at the Gaston Gerard thanks to a Christophe Mandanne penalty.
