Gerard Pique admits he is flattered by interest from Atletico Madrid - but he has no intention of leaving Manchester United.

The 20-year-old, who moved to Old Trafford in 2004 when he opted to leave Barcelona, spent last season on loan at Real Zaragoza as his first-team chances appeared to be limited.

However, Pique has made a big breakthrough this season and was on target for United in their UEFA Champions League victory over Dyanmo Kiev in midweek.

A number of Spanish clubs, including Atletico, were looking to make a January bid for the youngster - but he insists he is staying in England.

Flattered

"You never know what can happen in life, but right now my future is with Manchester Unietd," explained Pique.

"I have a lot of pride when a club such as Atletico is interested in me, that means I am doing something good.

"Atletico have demonstrated that they belong in the top group of teams and they would be a good option for any player.

"If things do not work out for then I will look at my future at Old Trafford - but I am only thinking about working hard and improving every day."

Pique is quick to pay tribute to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He has called on me to take the experience and continue improving," he told AS.

Father figure

"Sir Alex has always treated me like a son and he demonstrated in the summer when Zaragoza pushed hard for me that he wants me in his side.

"Sometimes it is difficult to be out of the side, but you have to get over your anxiety. With (Nemanja) Vidic and (Rio) Ferdinand it can be hard to play, but you have to get the minutes in when you can and in addition to show your versatility is important."
