Real Mallorca beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the first leg of the Copa del Rey 16 tie, while Atletico Madrid were held by Real Valladolid.

Mallorca enjoyed the better of the first half and deservedly took the lead on 23 minutes when Oscar Trejo finished from close range after Real failed to deal with a corner.

But Real were back on level terms almost from the kick-off as Gonzalo Higuain unleashed an unstoppable volley from just inside the box after Wesley Sneijder's pass ricocheted into the air off Mallorca defender Ivan Ramis.

The hosts continued to press forward and were back in front five minutes into the second half when purported Liverpool target Juan Arango smashed home a low shot from 25 yards.

Real, though, should have levelled again on 68 minutes when Javier Saviola pulled the trigger when unmarked in front of goal, but the Argentine fired straight at Mallorca keeper Miguel Angel Moya.

Atletico failed to make their first-half dominance pay after drawing 0-0 at home to Valladolid.

The home side could have been ahead inside the opening two minutes when Diego Forlan broke through, but he was unable to steer his shot beyond the Valladolid keeper.

Within minutes, Valladolid offered a response with Alexis turning a shot wide from close range after being found unmarked from a corner.

Forlan, who could also have had a penalty after a shot struck a Valladolid arm, came closest to breaking the deadlock when striking the inside of the post on 27 minutes.
