Dick Advocaat believes a decision will be made regarding Andrei Arshavin's future by the end of the week.
The Zenit St Petersburg boss is reluctant to let his prized asset depart, but accepts that the ambitious playmaker must leave Russia in order to further his career.
The exciting 27-year-old was one of the stars of Euro 2008, while he also helped Zenit land Uefa Cup glory last season.
His eye-catching displays have caught the attention of a host of Europe's top clubs, although official approaches have been slow in coming.
Spanish giants Barcelona are the only side to have made an official enquiry, but Advocaat is braced for a flurry of activity over the next few days.
"Andrei hopes to play elsewhere in Europe and something will happen this week," he said.
"He is a good player and would do well in any league in Europe but my advice to him is that it's up to him where he goes.
"He has to do what he wants, he is the man who will be playing.
"It is disappointing that he is leaving but that's the way it goes."
Premier League sides Arsenal and Chelsea are believed to be interested in the player, although with Spain thought to be his preferred destination Real and Barcelona may be left to fight it out for his signature.
