Barcelona claimed a significant scalp against Valencia, Villarreal salvaged a point after finding themselves 3-0 down while Sporting Gijon and Atletico Madrid played out a seven-goal thriller.

Pep Guardiola's Barcelona were at their attacking best as they brushed third-placed Valencia aside with a 4-0 success at Camp Nou.

A Thierry Henry hat-trick and strike from Daniel Alves sealed the win to leave Valencia eight points adrift of the leaders.

Getafe stormed into a three-goal lead at Estadio El Madrigal as Esteban Granero, Jaime Gavilan and Javier Casquero all netted in the first 29 minutes.

But third-placed Villarreal fought valiantly with former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires pulling one back before Sebastian Eguren and ex-Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi struck in the final moments.

Atletico Madrid were the victors in a thrilling clash at Sporting Gijon, running out 5-2 winners.

Mate Bilic opened the scoring for the home side before Sergio Aguero netted a brace prior to the interval.

Diego Forlan bagged a double of his own while Maxi Rodriguez was on target, as David Barral hit a consolation.
