Ramos: Madrid role

BET ON FOOTBALL
Following Juande Ramos' appointment as manager of Real Madrid, Sky Bet are offering odds on when the former Spurs boss will get his first league win with the Spanish champions.

They make him 9/2 first to taste victory in 'El Gran Clįsico' at the Nou Camp on Saturday.

Madrid are nine points adrift of title rivals Barcelona and Sky Bet quote 5/6 for there to be over 9.5 points between the two rivals at season-end.

Real Madrid have confirmed coach Bernd Schuster has been sacked and replaced by former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos.

Ramos was introduced to the media at a hastily-arranged press conference on Tuesday afternoon before taking training for the first time.

Schuster's statement that Los Merengues had no chance of winning at Barcelona on Saturday did not go down well with the Bernabeu hierarchy and led to a clamour for him to go.

Madrid director of sport, Predrag Mijatovic, said: "We spoke to Schuster this morning about all the difficulties over the past few months.

"We came to the mutual agreement to take this decision. He took the decision well.

Amicable

"I have to take the opportunity to thank Bernd Schuster for the work he did at Real Madrid. He did an excellent job last season to win the title and the Spanish Supercopa."

Madrid have been rocked by poor performances and problems behind the scenes in recent weeks and morale hit a new low on Sunday when the champions were beaten at home by Sevilla after coming back from two goals down.

Instead of issuing a rallying cry, Schuster attempted to play some unconvincing mind games and stated that his team would not be able to win 'el Clasico' this weekend at Camp Nou, a game that can be seen live on Sky Sports 1.

Ramos has been out of football since being sacked by Spurs in October and while his work may not have been appreciated in North London, his stock in Spain is still high.

The Spanish giants have initially handed Ramos a six-month deal.

He said: "I would like to thank the board for their confidence - I face this job with excitement. It's everybody's dream.

"I hope I don't let anyone down and that I achieve the successes that this club has set for this season."

Excited

Ramos added that both he and the club have the option to extend their association beyond the end of the season.

"In most of my previous jobs I have had short contracts," he continued. "We came to a quick agreement and I'm delighted. If I'm happy at the end of the season then I might extend the contract.

"Both sides are free to see what happens."

Ramos' first task will be to face in-form Barca at the weekend, but he insists the match should be treated like any other.

"You have to confront every game with the will to win. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Barca are playing excellent football and doing well, but Real Madrid have the character and prestige to face any club in any stadium in the world."

Sebastien Naville (Liverpool fan) says...

It seems they are a few that have no clue about football out of the prem! Fair enough its now the best league in the coefficient but only as of the end of last season! Juande Ramos is one of the most respected managers in Spain!!! With Benitez, and it seems Guardiola is following the same footsteps! Have you ever heard of Sevilla foot club before! Obviously some people havnt!!! Well they were a midtable team with low transfer budgets! Im talking lower than the avg. prem side!!! Easily! This guy managed to win trophies like no other at Sevilla! 2 UEFA Cups in a row! Came 5th 2 seasons running, Got them 3rd in La Liga and not too far behind the champions aswell, i think it was 3 points aswell off the champs! Got them in the Champions league! Won the Super European Cup against Barca at their best and with a convincing victory 3-0!!! Won the Spanish Super Cup, Won the Copa del Rey the same season they came 3rd and won the UEFA Cup! Under his reign the Sanchez Pizjuan (Yes, the Sevilla stadium) became a fortress almost impossible to beat them there! Created a hard working team with players that came through their youth ranks like Sergio Ramos Diego Capel Reyes Antonio Puerta (R.I.P.) Dani Alves was given a free role due to who? Ramos and became the best wing back in the world! Started the career of Fazio who is probably gonna become one of the best center backs in the world! Ramos didnt do aweful at Spurs he won you the Carling Cup and got you out of relegation in the first season! I think spurs players are a lazy bunch, spoilt and get wasted every weekend and as for the new players they didnt have enough time to adapt if you change half of your squad with different nationalitys ofcourse its gonna take time! The mentality at Spurs was to low for his standards! Not in all players but some! & at Real he might not change anything this season but nxt season they will be in the CL final at the Bernabeu im sure of it!

What on earth are real madrid thinking ? Bad decision that one. If anything real madrid should have paid liverpool £5m for benitez and got him instead. Just like spurs got redknapp. Very bad decision.

Its very funny how football fans especiallly Spurs fans discredit top managers..I am happy that Real have recognised Juande's abilities..I hope he does well there, and with the squad that they have, the champions league is a big possibility..Goodluck Senor Ramos

I'm a Barca fan for life. Let me start by saying that it does not matter who is the coach of Madrid, barca will hammer them just like they have done to Sevilla and Valencia, who were suppose to offer us some stiff competition. SECONDLY,we will win the Champions Leauge and the King's Cup. Madrid will finish fifth and qualify fou a UEFA spot, at least I hope. By the way, no coach of worth will leave a settled team for Madrid, where even winning La Liga does not guarantee a continuation. Go BARCA.

Even though Jol did a decent job at Spurs, Ramos was always the World Class manager. You can see this from his league Cup win in his first season, something Jol couldn't acheive in his 3 year tenure here. Ramos' downfall was the language barrier as well as the total re schuffle of the side of which Commoli was fully at fault for. Ramos will always be respected at Spurs.

Real are lucky coz ramos was available and its certain will deliver.Though with all the injury crisis facing the club, given time Ramos will rejuvenate real. Its not late for real to bounce back to top form.A win or a draw in the el clasico will be a morale boosting.Ramos, all the best back in la liga.

When will Real Madrid learn from their mistakes? How can you sack Bernd and go for Juande who can not even handle a side like Spurs. Rafa can now concentrate and win the league for us this season.

I am shocked at comments on what Ramos had achieved to deserve the Madrid job. These guys certainly cannot see beyond their nose! This chap did a marvelous job with Seville which i think is a much bigger club than the very average Spurs! The language barrier and a host of other factors contributed to his poor experience in London. Please let it be known that this guy is a very good coach and got the Madrid job on merit. I wish him all the best.

Congrats and all that to Ramos. I know he did not have the best of times at The Lane, however, I thank him for the Carling Cup last season and I am sure had things been different and the football world not been such a deliver now (or get sacked in the morning) high pressure enviroment he would have turned things around, lets not forget he came to WHL as a double UEFA cup winner! I look forward to seeing how Real perform now. Good luck Ramos is what I say.

I am a hardcore madridista & really feeling lil sorry for schuster...he had to fight against all odds in past few months..last day departure of robinho n poor management by club in summer transfers didn't help him...then look at the injury crisis we are in...but still he has played some bizzare mind games through press conferences...he didn't speak a word in half time meeting when we were dumped out in copa del rey...no matter how week your team might be currently you cant say what he said before barca game...on that front i guess juande ramos might do a good job...he was superb with sevila...his man management skills are good which i guess Real need most at the moment...he can do the same job as capello did a season back..bring that madridista spirit back & results will follow...but i still doubt whether he will be in charge for next season as some big names will definitely follow in summers...

I feel this appointment will be a turning point in Real's season and this will help them to turn a corner in their season. He is a proven manager in Spain.

Stephen Cox (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

I'm a Spurs fan and believe that Juande will do a top job with Real Madrid. His success at Seville was mainly due to his inspirational man management skills that he could employ effectively as it was in his mother tongue. His big mistake at Spurs was that he didn't master the English language and so he was unable to motivate the players in the same way.

Chano Dewens (Manchester United fan) says...

Someone asked what Ramos has done to land this job. Look at his time in Sevilla to find out how, Premier League is not the only league in the world. He is a world class coach and will do much better with Real than with an average brittish side.

Phil Hines (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

I'm gob smacked, I'm sure his problems at Tottenham were the language barrier and his Sporting Director, but he made some bizarre tactical decisions and really killed the moral in the club. But no hard feelings i hope he does really well at Madrid!!

Danny Waldenstrom (Watford fan) says...

The increasingly desperate sacking of coaches seen in recent years is really a dead end for clubs. How do they expect coaches to be able to take on long-term projects, building up new teams with perhaps young and promising players if it's always "perform now" that counts? What if Barcelona would have reasoned in this way when Rijkard started building his young team which eventually won the CL...

Neil Woods says...

Interesting! I know he is very well thought of in Spain, and I bet he does a cracking job with Madrid. I know he did an awful job at Spurs and this could be down to a variety of reasons, but what's the betting that Real win the Spanish title now! The good thing is that it leaves Rafa alone !!!

Posted 14:47 9th December 2008

Barrie Jackson (Manchester United fan) says...

Well at least Juande speaks Spanish so that's a point in his favour that he didn't have at Spurs. However he's got an uphill climb like anyone who goes into Real Madrid. The team is not good enough to win the Champions this season, they're out of the Cup and a miracle needs to happen if they are to win the Liga. Good Luck Juande, you're going to need plenty of it! If anyone out there is a betting person go for a score draw against Barcelona !!

Michael Griffin (Manchester United fan) says...

Let me get this straight, this guy can barely muster a squad together at Tottenham Hotspur, and could not keep them out of the relegation zone, and now he manages the best club in Spain? Klass-Jan Huntelaar must be regretting signing that contract now.
