Aguero: Struck for Atletico
Sevilla climbed to third with a victory over Villarreal, while Atletico Madrid beat Real Betis.
Renato was the hero for Sevilla as they beat Villarreal 1-0 at home to leapfrog their rivals and join second-placed Valencia on 30 points.
Renato fired home the crucial goal on the stroke of half-time and Villarreal could not fight back.
Villarreal's bid to get back into the game suffered a blow when Joseba Llorente was sent off in the 53rd minute and Sevilla held on against the 10 men to secure all three points.
Atletico Madrid moved above their city rivals Real Madrid and into fifth place as they saw off Real Betis 2-0.
Atletico have been superb in recent weeks and they quickly broke the deadlock courtesy of Maxi Rodriguez after 20 minutes.
Sergio Aguero then got in on the act on 80 minutes to take Atletico's goal tally to 11 in their last three games.
Real Valladolid continued their fine form with a 3-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna.
Deportivo came into the game on the back of three successive wins but Valladolid took the lead through Jonathan Sesma after 15 minutes and went on to win convincingly.
Pedro Lopez made it 2-0 in the 26th minute and Pedro Leon added the third on 56 minutes as Valladolid extended their unbeaten run to five games.
Recreativo Huelva won the battle of the bottom two clubs as they beat Osasuna 1-0.
Adrian struck the crucial blow with just four minutes remaining to give Recreativo only their third victory of the campaign and take them four points clear of Osasuna.
Getafe piled more misery on Real Mallorca with a 4-1 success at home against the Islanders.
Aritz Aduriz found the target for Mallorca on 32 minutes but Getafe were far too strong with Cosmin Contra (13), Ikechukwu Uche (31), Manu del Mora1 (71) and Jaime Gavilan (87) all on the scoresheet.
Athletic Bilbao also picked up three points as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Sporting Gijon.
The damage was done in the first half with Fernando Llorente netting from the penalty spot after six minutes and Andoni Iraola (22) and David Lopez (32) also scored.
Almeria ended a three-match losing streak as they drew 1-1 against Racing Santander, Acasiete (62) cancelling out Ezequiel Garay's opener in the 33rd minute.
Malaga left it late to defeat Numancia 2-0 as Antonio Apono (85) and Nabil Baha (89) grabbed the goals.
