Valencia climbed into fifth and closed the gap on fourth placed Villarreal to just two points after a comfortable win over Getafe, as Atletico Madrid slumped to a home defeat against lowly Osasuna.

Valencia went ahead at The Mestalla on 20 minutes as Juan Mata pounced and just minutes later David Villa fired home a second from the penalty spot.

Just after the break Getafe were awarded there own penalty and Francisco Casquero stepped up to convert but any hope they had of getting something out of the match was short-lived.

Raul Abiol made it 3-1 before yet another penalty as Getafe also had goalkeeper Jacobo Sanz dismissed. Villa was on hand to convert the fourth for his second goal.

Valencia moved up to fifth as Atletico Madrid were shocked 4-2 by Osasuna - who leap out of the bottom three to fourteenth courtesy of the three points.

Walter Pandiani had struck for Osasuna after just eight minutes only for Diego Forlan to level not long after.

The visitors then struck two goals either side of the break as Krisztian Vadocz (44) and a second Pandiani (48) goal made it 3-1.

Masoud Shojaei then added a fourth before Pablo grabbed another for Atletico - but it was too little too late as Osasuna claimed a much needed win.

Things could have been worse for Atletico as Deportivo La Coruna could have moved level on points with them, but they were undone 3-1 at bottom-of-the-table Espanyol - who are now six points adrift of fourth from bottom Getafe.

Ivan Alonso put Espanyol ahead after just 13 minutes and Ivan de la Pena doubled their advantage five-minutes before the break.

Niouoi Lassad's (42) goal gave Deportivo some hope, but an Alberto Lopo own goal in injury time secured the valuable win for Espanyol.

The final game of the day saw Racing Santander a 2-0 win at Sporting Gijon to climb back into tenth.

The win came courtesy of second-half goals from Nikola Zigic (54) and Gonzalo Colsa (89).
