Racing Santander have appointed Miguel Angel Portugal as their new manager after the departure of Juan Carlos Mandia.

Portugal has agreed a contract until June 2011 and will be taking control of the club for the second time - having managed Racing during the 2006/07 campaign.

He left the club at the end of that season to take up a position as technical secretary with Real Madrid, and was tipped to be given the manager's job following the sacking of Bernd Schuster, although Juande Ramos was eventually appointed.

Santander parted company with Mandia after a poor start to the season, despite the fact that he was only appointed during the summer.

The Cantabrian outfit currently lie 17th in the table with just seven points from their 10 opening league games, and have won just once in the Primera Division so far this term.

In their only match since Mandia's departure, Racing avoided cup embarrassment by downing Salamanca 4-1 in their second leg to progress through to the last 16, with coaches Juan Jose Gonzalez and Federico Castanos taking the reins for that game.

Portugal's first match in charge is a difficult one as he prepares to face his former employers Real at the Bernabeu on Saturday.
