Quique Sanchez Flores has agreed a one-year extension to his contract at Atletico Madrid.

The new deal means the highly-rated coach will remain in charge of the Primera Liga giants for the 2010/11 campaign.

He took the reins at Vicente Calderon on a short-term basis in October 2009, filling the void created by Abel Resino's sacking.

Inheriting a struggling club punching well below their weight, he was able to oversee a remarkable reversal in fortune.

Atletico ended up reaching two cup finals under his guidance, helping to counter the disappointment of a mid-table finish.

In the Europa League final they overcame Fulham in extra-time, picking up their first major trophy since 1996 along the way, while they were beaten 2-0 by Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final.

Sanchez Flores will be hoping to build on his early promise next season, with the 45-year-old set to put pen to paper on Wednesday.
