Hunter: impressed with Ronaldo's confidence

I think the media over here agree with me, there are cowards in that team who have been hiding and who have been unable to take that responsibility on their shoulders that he is delighted to take.

Guillem Balague and Graham Hunter have a difference of opinion over what Cristiano Ronaldo's impact at Real Madrid has been.

Ronaldo, starting his first home match in more than two months against Almeria was at the centre of a hugely-eventful match that Real eventually won 4-2.

The Portuguese star scored Real's last goal and also won and then missed a penalty before picking up two yellow cards in the final four minutes. The first was for removing his shirt in celebration of his goal and then, soon after, he was shown a second yellow card for kicking Juanma Ortiz.

"We saw on Sunday he is demon and he is angel," said Guillem on Revista de la Liga.

"His first booking was for taking his shirt off celebrating a fourth goal against Almeria - he shouldn't be doing that. And then although he got provoked he fell for it. After the game the sporting director Jorge Valdano spoke to him and said don't fall for these things - go out and apologise to everybody.

"He apologised to his team mates and he apologised to the whole world but you feel that he is not saying it because he means it but he is saying it because everything is about him.

"And as a very important player in that squad says; Ronaldo does think he is the best in the world which is important to have in a team but it can also be a problem.

"When you see Ronaldo doing things like this it shows there is a lack of leadership in Real Madrid, he thinks he is the centre of the world and commits those sorts or errors."

Hunter, over in Barcelona, disagrees that it is a problem and had high praise for the former Manchester United star.

"I want to take issue a little bit with what Guillem has been saying because Ronaldo thinks he is the best at Real Madrid because he is shooting on target every 11 minutes," he said.

"On average he is scoring a goal for Real Madrid every 89 minutes. He is faster than those who he plays with and those who he plays against.

"I think the media over here agree with me, there are cowards in that team who have been hiding and who have been unable to take that responsibility on their shoulders that he is delighted to take. Ronaldo matured greatly at Manchester United and he will help this team become a fighting unit.

"The media has been mixed by the weekend activities but nobody could miss the impact he has had on this squad in terms of pace, power, goals and above all confidence since he came back."
