Roberto Mancini has played down speculation that he could be making a surprise return to the San Siro as Inter Milan's manager.

With current boss Jose Mourinho tipped to move back to the English Premier League, the 44-year-old has been quick to dismiss suggestions he would be in the running to replace the Portuguese coach.

"Me to return to Inter in July? Nobody has contacted me," Mancini told Italian channel Rai TV.

"Inter don't need a coach, even if anything can happen in football.

"If I had to choose, my heart would say Sampdoria."

After being sacked following a bust-up with Inter chairman Massimo Moratti because of their UEFA Champions League exit last year to Liverpool, the Italian regrets how his time with the Nerazzurri ended abruptly.

"It hasn't been a good thing. It has been done coldly and was a short announcement," he said.

"I expected a different thing after four years' job and success."
