David Beckham has sent a message to his Milan team-mates, thanking them for their support as he begins the road to recovery.

Beckham's hopes of a fourth World Cup were dashed on Sunday as the England international ruptured his left Achilles tendon in Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo.

The 34-year-old star had surgery in Finland on Monday and has wished his Milan colleagues well as they aim to wrest the Serie A title back from city rivals Inter.

"I want to wish the coach and all my friends good luck for the rest of the season, and I hope you can bring home the title," read the message, which has been posted on Milan's official website.

"I would also like to thank all of you for the support and love that you have all showed me after the game with Chievo.

"You have really touched me and I know that I have real friends in the team."

The injury cut short Beckham's second loan stint with Milan from LA Galaxy and he voiced his desire to return to the San Siro once he returns to full fitness.

"I hope to play with you again and be part of this fantastic club. Once again, many thanks for your affection and good luck."
