Bologna have opted to appoint former Siena boss Alberto Malesani as their new manager to replace Franco Colomba.

The 56-year-old coach has a wealth of experience under his belt, having previously managed the likes of Fiorentina, Panathinaikos and Parma - who he led to a Coppa Italia and Uefa Cup title.

Bologna opted to sack former boss Colomba on the eve of the new season after he guided the club to 17th in Serie A last term.

Youth team coach Paolo Magnani took the reins for the Rossoblu's 0-0 draw with champions Inter Milan on Monday, but Malesani will now be in charge of first-team affairs.

His opening match in charge will be a trip to Rome to play Lazio in the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, after signing a one-year deal.
