Ajax have told Roma they must up their bid for Maarten Stekelenburg if they wish to sign the goalkeeper.

The two clubs held talks on Thursday but Roma's offer of €5million was rejected by Ajax.

Stekelenburg, 28, is eager for a new challenge having spent his entire career with the Amsterdam outfit and has already agreed personal terms with Roma.

But the Holland international will be going nowhere if the two clubs cannot agree a fee and technical manager Danny Blind has explained Ajax are holding out for an improved bid.

"The deal is not done," he told De Telegraaf newspaper. "Ajax are waiting for Roma to change the offer.

Wish to leave

"It is clear we don't want to lose Stekelenburg but, on the other hand, it is his sporting wish.

"We want the right price for him, though, and that's more than €5million."

Stekelenburg has just one season left on his contract with Ajax and was linked with Manchester United before they signed David de Gea.

He has made 282 appearances for Ajax and was named the club's player of the year last season having previously picked up the award in 2007/08.

Stekelenburg has won 40 caps for Holland, helping them reach last year's World Cup final, when they lost 1-0 to Spain after extra-time.
