Lazio president Claudio Lotito has confirmed he has rejected the resignation of under-pressure coach Edy Reja.
Reja made no secret of his unhappiness after fans booed the team in their 2-1 home defeat to Genoa on Sunday.
The coach met with Lotito on Monday evening but the club chief would not accept his resignation.
Lotito also called the Lazio players in for a second meeting in an attempt to convince Reja to change his mind.
"It's true, I did not accept the resignation and would not let the coach go," Lotito told Sky Sport Italia.
"As long as I am the president, the coach will be untouchable. Reja just wanted to express his unhappiness at a city that does not love him.
"He is very disappointed at the negative climate that has been created around him despite the fact he is a man who has given a great deal to Lazio.
He added: "I wanted to call the squad together so we can all close ranks around the coach and he knows the club and players are with him.
"We will all begin again from Wednesday's game with Cesena."
It is thought Reja remains unconvinced over staying at the club and has asked for more time to consider his future.
The likes of Gigi Del Neri, Pasquale Marino, Roberto Donadoni and even ex-Inter coach Rafa Benitez have been tipped as candidates to succeed him should the tactician walk out.
