The surgeon set to operate on David Beckham's injured Achilles on Monday expects the midfielder to be out for up to four months.
The experienced winger snapped a tendon while in action for AC Milan against Chievo on Sunday.
He left the Giuseppe Meazza on crutches, with his dreams of gracing this summer's World Cup seemingly left in tatters.
Such fears have now been confirmed, with medics revealing that Beckham will be sidelined for at least three months.
That would leave him with no time in which to work on his fitness ahead of a trip to South Africa.
The World Cup gets underway on 11th June and there is no way the 34-year-old will be ready by then.
He must now hope that his operation passes without a hitch and he is able to return to competitive action with parent club Los Angeles Galaxy in late summer.
"To start kicking and playing football about three months," said Dr Sakari Orava, the surgeon set to carry out the surgery on Beckham in Finland.
"For maximum performances and maximum kicks and jumps, maybe it takes one month more, three to four months before one is able to do light playing."
According to Sky Sports News' chief news reporter Bryan Swanson, Beckham is said to be devastated by the injury but touched by all the messages of support he has received since Sunday night.

Can't believe it's happened, Becks. How cruel. It will not be the same without you. Hope you get to go anyway to encourage the team as only you can do. Thank you for all the pleasure you have given all true English fans over the years - you will be sorely missed.

Absolutely gutted for Beckham. He may not have played a lot in this coming World Cup but I think he would have gone with the squad and would have been a very valuable substitute. He is still the best passer and crosser of a ball in the world. The proof of that was when Milan got beaten 4-0 by Man U during the week. His quick passing and deliveries made Milan better and he nearly scored. I feel sorry for him because he is a fantastic professional and gives everthing when he plays. Luckily, England have some good youngsters for that side of the field but can they deliver like Beckham, we'll have to wait and see.

I feel so sorry for David. He just lives for his football and is so patriotic for England. He will be sorely missed. He has the ability to turn a game around. Nobody takes a free kick like him. I just hope and pray for a miracle.

Couldn't believe the news this morning. We really do stand a chance of winning the world cup this summer. How fitting it would have been to see Becks in South Africa with his hands on the trophy. You've had your moments Becks good and bad, but you have always worn the three lions with pride. Absolutely gutted for ya and hope to see you back playing soon

I feel gutted for him . I do believe he would have gone to the world cup not just because of his experience but also because he had proven his comitment to the cause . He really put himself out to get on a plane and fly for hours to play or be on the subs bench for England. I wish him all the best.
