Giancarlo Abete, president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), has questioned Uefa's faith in under-fire referee Tom Henning Ovrebo.

The Norwegian official, who shot to prominence during last season's UEFA Champions League semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona, has been making the headlines again for all the wrong reasons.

A questionable display at the heart of Bayern Munich's controversial 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in the last 32 of Europe's premier club competition on Wednesday has once again seen him fall under the microscope.

Bayern now hold what could prove to be a decisive lead heading into the second leg of the crunch contest, but have Ovrebo to thank for being in such a commanding position.

Miroslav Klose's last-gasp winner at Allianz Arena was plundered from an offside position, while Fiorentia were left aghast at the decision to dismiss Massimo Gobbi and the subsequent failure to hand a similar punishment to Bayern's Mark van Bommel.

Grave error

The Serie A outfit have already expressed their disgust at Ovrebo's error-prone display and FIGC supremo Abete has now added his considerable professional weight to the debate.

"This was a grave error, especially as it happened at such an important stage of the Champions League," he said on the decision to allow Klose's late effort.

"This error decided the result and it has to be acknowledged that the control the referee had on the match was not adequate.

"It's possible to make mistakes, but not this big. We are not talking about centimetres, but metres, and with a clear view of the incident."
