Hamburg midfielder Nigel De Jong will be sidelined with a knee injury for the rest of the year.

The Holland international has been out of action since damaging ligaments playing for his country against Iceland on 11th October and further aggravated the problem during training last Friday.

An examination has now revealed that the Bundesliga outfit will have to do without him until after the winter break.

"It is important for me to start building up the strength in my knee very slowly," De Jong told Hamburg's official website.

"I think I'll be able to start playing again after the winter break."
