Hoffenheim surged back to the top of the Bundesliga table after previous leaders Bayer Leverkusen slipped up at lowly Arminia Bielefeld.

Champions Bayern Munich are hot on the heels of Hoffenheim after a big win at home, while Hertha Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt, Schalke and Wolfsburg also picked up three points.

Hoffenheim's unlikely challenge for the title continues after they returned to the top of the table after a 3-1 win at Cologne.

Demba Ba gave Hoffenheim a 32nd minute lead before Cologne had Kevin McKenna sent off on 52 minutes, and three minutes later the visitors' Gustavo was dismissed.

Vedad Ibisevic added a second for Hoffenheim on 67 minutes and scored his team's third two minutes from time after Petit had pulled one back for Cologne.

Leverkusen ceded top spot after a surprise 2-1 defeat at Arminia, who had been second from bottom at the start of the day.

Artur Wichniarek broke the deadlock for Arminia on 53 minutes and substitute Daniel Halfar increased the lead on 68 minutes.

Patrick Helmes, who scored Germany's goal against England in midweek, gave Bayer hope with a 78th minute goal, but the visitors were unable to find an equaliser.

Bayern came from behind to beat bottom side Energie Cottbus 4-1 at the Allianz Arena to stay on the heels of the leaders.

Ervin Skela gave Cottbus a shock lead after 25 minutes, but France ace Franck Ribery had levelled for the title holders four minutes later.

Martin Demichelis gave Bayern the advantage on 38 minutes and strike duo Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni netted in the space of five second-half minutes to seal a convincing victory.

Wolfsburg produced a stunning second-half performance to crush Stuttgart 4-1 at home.

Stuttgart led at half-time through Martin Lanig's 17th minute goal before Grafite levelled for Wolfsburg on 51 minutes.

Grafite put the hosts in front on 76 minutes before Edin Dzeko netted on 79 and 85 minutes to clinch the points.

Hertha Berlin survived a second-half fightback by Bochum to hang on for a 3-2 away win.

Raffael, Gojko Kacar and Cicero all scored in the first half for Hertha to set the visitors seemingly on the way to a comfortable win.

But Bochum rallied after half-time as substitute Stanislav Sestak scored on 50 minutes and Marcin Mieciel on 74 minutes to set up a tense finish.

Eintracht Frankfurt recorded an important win after thrashing Hannover 4-0 at home, with Nikos Liberopoulos and Marco Russ netting in the first half.

Liberopoulos grabbed his second of the game four minutes from time before Martin Fenin notched an injury-time fourth.

Halil Altintop scored twice as Schalke claimed a 3-1 win at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Altintop opened the scoring on 17 minutes and Jefferson Farfan converted from the penalty spot six minutes later.

Gladbach got back into the game through Rob Friend's goal on the half-hour mark, but Altintop scored in first-half injury-time.
