Stuttgart defender Khalid Boulahrouz has confirmed that team-mate Jens Lehmann has apologised to him following an incident in the Uefa Cup game against Zenit St Petersburg.

The former Chelsea man was wearing a head band in a bid to combat the freezing temperatures in Russia on Wednesday and found the going tough in his aerial battle with Zenit striker Pavel Pogrebnyak.

After losing a header in the Stuttgart six-yard box that ultimately presented Pogrebnyak with a free shot on goal, which he put wide, Lehmann confronted the Dutchman.

The former Arsenal shot-stopper, who was no stranger to controversy during his time in England, stormed out of his goal and ripped of his startled team-mate's headband and threw it towards the advertising hoardings behind his goal.

After the game, which the Germans lost 2-1, interim manager Markus Babbel played down the incident.

"Jens just wants to set an example," he told German TV station ZDF.

But Boulahrouz admitted that the veteran had apologised for his erratic behaviour.

"I was shocked ad surprised, it was like an explosion. But Jens apologised to me in the dressing room afterwards."
