Schalke manager Felix Magath has taken veteran Brazilian Flavio on trial as he bids to keep Heiko Westermann happy.

Key midfielder Jermaine Jones is set to miss the start of the new Bundesliga season after suffering a hairline fracture to his left shin.

Magath may be tempted to push Westermann out of defence into a more advanced position but he is also exploring other options and wants to take a look at Flavio.

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent following a spell with Barueri in his homeland.

Westermann, a crucial player for Magath, hopes to be able to stay in defence as he seeks to establish himself as a regular starter in the Germany team.

"It is of course not best for me to play in a different position at my club than I do under Joachim Low for Germany," he told Ruhr Nachrichten.

"Joachim Low opted against playing me from the start in the two recent World Cup qualifiers because of that."
