Mainz have moved swiftly to replace Jorn Andersen by appointing Thomas Tuchel as the club's new coach.

Andersen led Mainz to promotion to the Bundesliga last season, but has been sacked just days before the start of the new campaign.

He was dismissed due to a difference in opinion regarding the club's future direction, leading Mainz to promote Tuchel from the Under 19s to the first team.

General manager Christian Heidel said on bundesliga.de: "We watched Thomas Tuchel and his development as coach of our A-Juniors intensively and have discussed in the past about his perspectives with us.

"It was always clear to us that he would graduate up to the professionals. Now that moment has arrived a little earlier than we all thought."

Tuchel added: "The club showed me in talks a general perspective and announced very early the high esteem they hold me in.

"The timing of this decision naturally came as a surprise. Now I am living my dream here.

"I have respect for the Bundesliga but no fear."
