Bayern were held to a draw by Hoffenheim, Schalke got off to a winning start in the Bundesliga, while Eintracht Frankfurt shocked Werder Bremen.

Elsewhere, new boys Mainz drew with Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund and Hertha Berlin recorded opening weekend victories.

Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw by Hoffenheim in their Bundesliga opener.

Bayern, without injured playmaker Franck Ribery, strikers Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni as well as central defender Martin Demichelis struggled for long periods of the game.

Hoffenheim were denied an early opener when Josip Simunic's header was palmed out of the goal by Bayern keeper Michael Rensing, although television replays showed the ball was well over the goalline.

Bayern then broke the deadlock on 25 minutes when summer signing Ivica Olic converted fellow new boy Danijel Pranjic's cross.

Hoffenheim drew level four minutes before the break when Chinedu Obasi fired home from the edge of the box.

Kevin Kuranyi was the hero for Schalke in their 2-1 win at new boys Nurnberg.

German international Kuranyi gave Schalke the lead on 36 minutes and doubled the lead five minutes after the break.

Marek Mintal reduced the arrears three minutes from time, but Schalke held on for the three points.

Werder Bremen suffered a losing start to the season after going down 3-2 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

The visitors got off to a flying start with Ioannis Amanatidis firing them in front after just six minutes, but Mesut Ozil drew Bremen level on 13 minutes.

Amanatidis restored Eintracht's lead three minutes before the break, but their lead proved short-lived with Boubacar Sanogo equalising on the stroke of half-time.

Martin Fenin notched the winner for Eintracht on 71 minutes to give them the best possible start to the new campaign.

Mainz celebrated their return to the top flight with a 2-2 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Tim Hoogland gave Mainz the ideal start with the opener after just six minutes, but two goals in a minute from Eren Derdiyok (42) and Stefan Kiessling (43) turned the game on its head.

Daniel Gunkel came off the bench to earn Mainz a point with an 82nd minute leveller.

Borussia Dortmund were gifted a 1-0 victory over Cologne at Signal Iduna Park.

Marvin Matip's unfortunate own goal 15 minutes from time proved to be enough for Dortmund.

Gojko Kacar's late strike gave Hertha Berlin a 1-0 victory over Hannover at the Olympiastadion.

Kacar struck eight minutes from time to earn Hertha all three points.
