Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal has asked for more time to improve the team's fortunes.

The Dutchman took over the Bundesliga giants in July but they are already eight points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen after just eight games, and the pressure is building on Van Gaal.

Bayern's next game is against mid-table outfit SC Freiburg and a bad result in that match would crank up the heat on the former Ajax and Barcelona boss.

"If I'm given necessary time, I'll have the chance of doing something big," Van Gaal told DSF.

"It's in April or May that the distribution of prizes takes place, not in October.

"I've shown what I'm capable of in other clubs I've been with, I think that the public and media have to keep faith with Louis van Gaal."

The Bayern manager also hinted that he could turn to Italian striker Luca Toni in a bid to turnaround the club's form, despite the player recently announcing that he would be open to a move to Serie A side Napoli.

Toni, who missed pre-season with an Achilles tendon injury, has to compete for a first-team place with Thomas Mueller, Ivica Olic, Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez.
