Mertesacker: Late equaliser
Per Mertesacker's last-gasp goal earned Werder Bremen a 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg to send them to the top of the table.
Werder looked like missing out on top spot after Edin Dzeko fired Wolfsburg in front four minutes before the break.
Hugo Almeida drew Werder level on 62 minutes only for Dzeko to restore the lead five minutes before the end with his second of the contest.
Werder grabbed an equaliser in the closing seconds when Mertesacker popped up with a goal to send them above Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.
Schalke missed the chance to climb up to second after going down 1-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Marco Reus' fifth minute strike proved to be enough to give Monchengladbach the spoils.
Borussia Dortmund picked up an impressive 2-1 win at Hoffenheim.
Jakub Blaszcykowski gave Dortmund the perfect start with the opener after just three minutes, but Demba Ba drew the home side level four minutes after the break.
Nuri Sahin grabbed the winner for Dortmund from the penalty spot 11 minutes from time.
Hamburg missed the chance to close the gap on the leading pack after being held to a 1-1 draw at Mainz.
Tunay Torun fired Hamburg in front after just three minutes, but Tim Hoogland earned Mainz a point with an equaliser six minutes from time.
Freiburg climbed clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table with a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Nurnberg.
Stefan Reisinger scored the only goal of the game after 12 minutes to give Freiburg the three points.
Eintracht Frankfurt piled the misery on basement boys Hertha Berlin with a 3-1 victory in the capital
Patrick Ochs gave Eintracht the lead on 11 minutes and two quick-fire goals from Maik Franz (70) and Alexander Meier (75) put the game beyond Hertha.
Substitute Adrian Ramos grabbed a consolation for Hertha nine minutes from time, but the side still sit marooned at the bottom of the table.
