Wolfsburg star striker Edin Dzeko may leave the club this summer, according to general director Dieter Hoeness.

The Bosnia international has been linked with a long list of potential suitors after his 26 league goals helped guide his side to their first ever Bundesliga title last season.

The striker was reported to be set to move to AC Milan last summer, but Dzeko decided to stay at the Volkswagen Arena and signed an extension to his contract.

Wolfsburg however have failed to maintain their success, lying in eleventh place in the table this campaign and failing to make it through the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

The extension signed by the 23-year-old included a clause which allows the player to leave the club as early as this summer, if they are offered a figure in the region of £36million.

Hoeness, talking to German magazine BILD, confessed that the club are in talks over the transfer of Dzeko, with Milan rumoured to be the likely interested party.

"According to the contract, the player has time until the 31st May to decide, but both sides want to clarify it first, if possible in March," said Hoeness.

"We are not obligated to sell a player like him, unless someone offers 40 million euros. (£36 million)

"If a team is ready to shell out this amount for him, it must only give us the bank guarantees and Dzeko will go.

"But in Europe there are few clubs that can afford it and no club has stepped forward in concrete till now."
