Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann could extend his career for a further season, according to the club's general manager.

The former Arsenal and Germany number one was due to hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign in May, but the 40-year-old veteran may be thinking of reconsidering his decision after seeing his side perform well in the UEFA Champions League.

Lehmann, forever a controversial and colourful character in the game, was meant to retire at the end of last season but according to general manager Horst Heldt, he has not ruled out the possibility of playing on.

"There is a clear agreement with Jens Lehmann. He is going to hang up his boots at the end of the season," said Heldt.

"But he is Jens Lehmann though, you never know."

The statement comes in the wake of news that Stuttgart's back-up keeper Sven Ulreich was injured playing for Germany's Under-21 team in Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Iceland, leaving him out for the rest of the season.

When asked about his intentions of retiring, Lehmann gave a typically thought-provoking response.

"At first there has been no change to my intentions, but you never know in the game of football," Lehmann told the Bild newspaper.
