Raul: Leaves Real
Real Madrid have confirmed that talismanic striker Raul is leaving the club on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old spent 16 years at the Bernabeu, breaking Alfredo di Stefano's all-time goalscoring record, becoming club captain and one of the most iconic and decorated players in Real history.
Reports suggest that the former Spanish international is set to join German side Schalke on a two-year deal, but no agreement has yet been confirmed.
The player admitted that he was sad to leave the club he has spent his entire career with, but was looking for first-team football after becoming a bit-part player last season.
"It's a hard day for me," Raul said at a press conference on Monday.
"Football has been my life and Real Madrid my home and together we have lived unique moments.
"I feel like a footballer still and I will keep on playing, but I will always be loyal to Real Madrid. I have tried to give everything in my time here.
"A new period starts today.
"I have been happy at Real Madrid and I will always be willing to help the club in whatever it needs."
President Florentino Perez also paid tribute to the player, stating that his contribution to the club would never be forgotten.
"We will never forget Raul," he said.
"There are many men who form part of the legend of Real Madrid, but few that are chosen to embody the club - Raul is one of those.
"This is not so much a goodbye as a see you again - this will always be your home."
