Schalke have revealed that they hope to keep hold of Spanish striker Raul beyond the current season and say they have the money to do so.

The 34-year-old ended an 18-year association with Real Madrid by signing for the German club in 2010.

He scored 18 goals in the Champions League and Bundesliga last season and has netted three in their opening seven games of the current campaign.

A number of clubs were reportedly interested in signing him before the transfer window closed this summer, including Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.

Raul's contract runs out at the end of this season, but club president Clemens Tonnies has revealed that he will be offered new terms.

Important

He told Sport Bild: "Such an experienced player is very important for our young team and he proves that in every game.

"He is incredibly endearing. I have made it absolutely clear to him that he belongs with Schalke.

"We are proud for every minute that Raul plays in a Schalke shirt.

"When somebody plays good football, gets involved and identifies himself with the club, then there is nothing to say you should not continue with him.

"Financially, we can afford Raul. We have such a solid financial base that we would not have any difficulties even if we don't qualify for Europe."
