Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf is set to be rewarded with a contract extension following his side's impressive start to the Bundesliga season.

Bremen sit second in the table after six games but last year Schaaf, the longest-serving boss in the division, came close to being dismissed after a disappointing 13th-place finish.

But the 50-year-old, who has been at the helm for over 12 years, is now to be rewarded for turning the club's fortunes around after convincing the board to stick with him.

"We have discussed it with the club's management and we will soon start negotiations with Thomas Schaaf over a new contract," the club's general manager Klaus-Dieter Fischer told the Kreiszeitung Syke newspaper.

"I am convinced that Thomas will remain with us, if the conditions are right. The only person who can be our coach is Thomas Schaaf."

Schaaf led Bremen to a league and cup double in 2004 and installed the club as Champions League stalwarts before falling well short last season.
