Bayern Munich and Hamburg enjoyed emphatic away wins while Schalke overcame Werder Bremen to go second.

Borussia Monchengladbach edged an eight-goal thriller at home to Hannover as Freiburg and Hoffenheim were both held in front of their own fans.

Fresh from qualifying for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a big win away to Juventus, Bayern romped to a 5-1 success at struggling Bochum.

Mario Gomez finished from Ivica Olic's cross to open the scoring on 23 minutes before Bochum's Mergun Mavraj put through his own net on 33 minutes.

Olic made it 3-0 before half-time and he increased the lead further five minutes after the break when heading home Holger Badstuber's cross.

Danijel Pranjic scored a fifth for Bayern on 56 minutes before Christian Fuchs replied with a consolation for Bochum with 14 minutes remaining.

Schalke moved into second spot in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen at the Weser Stadion.

Kevin Kuranyi set Schalke on their way with the opener two minutes after the break and he turned provider for Jan Moravek's clinching second goal on 72 minutes.

The win moves Schalke to within a point of leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Hamburg are now just four points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen after a devastating second-half performance earned a 4-0 win at lowly Nurnberg.

Eljero Elia made the breakthrough three minutes into the second half before he teed up Marcell Jansen to score on the hour mark.

Tunay Torun added Hamburg's third on 66 minutes before Netherlands international Elia scored his second of the game on 74 minutes.

Hannover were instrumental in their own downfall in losing 5-3 away to Gladbach after scoring three own goals.

Karim Haggui's blunder on 15 minutes gave Gladbach the lead and Rob Friend made it 2-0 on 22 minutes moments after he had been denied by the crossbar.

The visitors' Arnold Bruggink was denied by the post, and the hosts' Michael Bradley hit the bar, before Didier Ya Konan pulled a goal back for Hannover on 36 minutes.

Constant Djakpa's own goal and Bradley's drive put Gladbach in cruise control before Ya Konan scored his second of the game on 69 minutes.

Ya Konan was then sent off for picking up a second yellow card and Hannover pulled it back to 4-3 through Christian Schulz three minutes from time.

However, Hannover's hopes of an unlikely comeback were thwarted in stoppage-time when Haggui put the ball through his own net for the second time in the game.

Hoffenheim's bid to cling on to the coat-tails of the leading pack was dented by a 1-1 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sejad Salihovic converted from the penalty spot for Hoffenheim after just nine minutes, but Pirmin Schwegler earned Frankfurt a point just past the hour mark.

Freiburg inched up a place at the lower end of the table after playing out a lacklustre 0-0 draw at home with Cologne.
