Almeida and Marin celebrate Werder's romp
Werder Bremen have moved top of the Bundesliga table, albeit for 24 hours, after crushing Freiburg 6-0.
Hugo Almeida opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, although the floodgates opened for the visitors after half time.
Marko Marin doubled their advantage before Almeida's second two minutes later effectively ended the match as a contest.
Further goals from Mesut Ozil, Naldo from the penalty spot and substitute Markus Rosenberg added the icing on the cake.
Hoffenheim were also big winners away from home following a 4-0 success at Cologne.
Early goals from Carlos Eduardo and Chinedu Ogbuke laid the platform for a fine away win.
Second half efforts from Demba Ba and Vedad Vukcevic, the second coming from the penalty spot late on secured the comfortable success.
Borussia Monchengladbach continued the victories away from home with a 2-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Oka Nikolov's own goal broke the deadlock with Roel Brouwers doubling their lead. Pirmin Schwegler's late penalty was nothing more than a consolation.
Schalke maintained their title hopes with a 2-0 home win over Hannover.
Jefferson Farfan put the home side ahead with substitute Jan Moravek's late effort settling the home fans' nerves.
Hertha Berlin were close to claiming just their second league win of the season before being held by Stuttgart 1-1.
Adrian Ramos gave them a priceless lead before Zdravko Kuzmanovic levelled matters on 82 minutes, although he was then sent off to set up a nervy finish.
Nurnberg have moved out of the drop zone following a last-gasp 3-2 win at Wolfsburg.
Grafite's 79th minute penalty looked like giving the home side a point before Peer Kluge's injury-time goal sealed a thrilling win.
Albert Bunjaku earlier scored twice for Nurnberg with Ashkan Dejagah scoring in between his brace.
The evening match on Saturday evening saw Borussia Dortmund held to a goalless home draw with Mainz. Andre Schurrle had Mainz's best chance midway through the second half while Lucas Barrios nearly snatched it at the death.
