FC Twente returned to the top of the Eredivisie table with a win over Willem II, while AZ Alkmaar slightly closed the gap on the frontrunners by defeating VVV Venlo, and RKC Waalwijk remained bottom of the table after losing at Heerenveen.

Struggling Roda JC Kerk produced a late fight back at Heracles Almelo, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

Steve McClaren's Twente continue to earn praise in Holland and they continue to appear the favourites for the title after a 3-1 win at Willem II.

Wout Brama opened the scoring for Twente in the 8th minute, but a Christophe Gregoire penalty restored parity after quarter-of-an-hour.

However, Miroslav Stoch (35) and Bryan Ruiz (69) guaranteed the points for the visitors.

Ronald Koeman's AZ, who won the title last season under the leadership of Louis van Gaal, defeated VVV 2-0 at DSB Stadion, but remain well adrift of Twente.

The victory, courtesy of goals from Jeremain Lens (21) and Brett Holman (47), earned three points that moved AZ up the table.

RKC stayed rooted to the foot of the division after losing 3-1 to Heerenveen at Abe Lenstra Stadion.

Viktor Elm scored twice before the hour mark to put the home side in control, but substitute Fred Benson gave RKC hope with 12 minutes remaining.

Roy Beerens, though, ended any ideas that the visitors might have held about rescuing a point when he scored his side's third on the stroke of full-time.

Roda are one of the teams RKC will want to catch in the battle to stay in the top flight, and they found two late goals were in vain in a 3-2 loss at Heracles Almelo.

The home side were cruising after efforts from Everton Ramos da Silva (23), Bas Dost (56) and Willie Overtoom.

However, Roda setup a tense finale as substitute Mads Junker and Pa-Madou Kah both scored in the last eight minutes.
