Barcelona were victorious despite being reduced to nine men, Robbie Keane scored his first goal for Celtic while Inter Milan continue to boss Serie A.

Elsewhere, Bordeaux suffered a shock defeat, Bayern Munich moved level with the Germany leaders while FC Twente lost their first game of the season.

Primera Division

Real Madrid made light work of seeing off Espanyol as they ran out 3-0 winners at the Santiago Bernabeu. But leaders Barcelona remain five points clear, despite finishing their fixture against Getafe with only nine men.

Barca had Gerard Pique sent off early on while Rafael Marquez was also handed his marching orders, yet they still triumphed 2-1. Elsewhere, Valencia returned to winning ways as they overcame Valladolid, Real Zaragoza stunned high-flying Sevilla and Osasuna's excellent form continued.

Scotland

In the Scottish Cup fifth round, Celtic advanced courtesy of a 4-2 win over Dunfermline. New signing Keane came off the bench to score his first goal for the club. Elsewhere, Ross County were emphatic winners, but Rangers were held.

Just one SPL game took place at the weekend as Motherwell hosted Hamilton at Fir Park. The former were the victors thanks to Lukas Jutkiewicz's second-half strike, meaning Hamilton are now without a win in seven league matches.

Serie A

Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan continued their charge at the top of Italy's first tier after they brushed aside Cagliari 3-0. Roma now sit in second after Mirko Vucinic struck late to down Fiorentina.

AC Milan could not find a way past Bologna so slip to third, Juventus' poor term goes on after they drew 1-1 at struggling Livorno, meaning Juve have now gone five games without a win, while Udinese ended Napoli's excellent form.

Ligue 1

League leaders Bordeaux fell to an emphatic and surprise 4-2 defeat against Rennes. Said result allowed Montpellier to close within three points of the pace-setters after their 2-0 success against Boulogne.

Marseille recorded a thumping 5-1 victory over Valenciennes while Grenoble also hit five past Auxerre. Fourth-placed Lyon were held to a goalless draw at Toulouse while Lille were also denied against Nice.

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich are now level on points with table-toppers Bayer Leverkusen after they capitalised on the latter's 1-1 draw with Vfl Bochum by beating Wolfsburg 3-1.

Werder Bremen ended a run of five straight losses as they left it late to vanquish Hertha Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg played out a six-goal thriller while Borussia Dortmund were beaten 3-2 by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Eredivisie

FC Twente suffered their first loss of the season after they were roundly seen off 3-0 by Ajax. That defeat allowed unbeaten PSV Eindhoven to move three points clear at the summit following a 2-0 win against ADO Den Haag.

Elsewhere, Feyenoord lost ground on the leading trio after they were downed 2-1 by AZ while Heracles and FC Groningen played out a cracking seven-goal encounter that the former won.

Best of the rest

Belgian leaders Anderlecht suffered only their third loss of the season, Braga closed the gap on Portuguese table-stoppers Benfica to four points, the top four in Turkey all drew, while Panathinaikos comfortably saw off Larissa in Greece's top tier.
