Wenger: Sees off McClaren

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger praised the response of his players to their shock defeat at Fulham last weekend as they brushed aside FC Twente to reach the money-spinning group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Wenger directed a rare burst of anger at his under-performing squad following their 1-0 reverse at Craven Cottage but had nothing but praise for the way they bounced back to overcome Steve McClaren's side 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

"It was a big game for us and the response was clear," said Wenger after the Gunners had advanced 6-0 on aggregate.

"There was togetherness and focus. That is what we wanted after a result like Saturday.

"We needed to be organised because they play a little with your patience. We were disciplined and focused and we were never really under threat."

Wenger added: "I felt the whole team was sharp. Physically we were much better than Saturday."
