Dimitar Berbatov could make an unexpected return to action when Manchester United host Besiktas in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The Red Devils could all but seal top spot in Group B having sewn up qualification to the last-16 with the 3-3 draw against CSKA Moscow last time out.

The Bulgarian international was expected to miss the clash having been sidelined for the last few weeks with a knee injury forcing him to miss the games against Chelsea and Everton.

However the £30.75million striker trained on Tuesday and could be considered fit enough to feature against the Turks.

Despite the good news regarding Berbatov United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has injury problems concerning a number of his defence.

Rio Ferdinand (calf) and Jonny Evans (calf) are definitely ruled out while John O'Shea and Gary Neville were both absent from training.

Brazilian full-back Fabio also sat out as did veteran goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar. The Dutch shot-stopper was not expected to face Besiktas anyway but picked up a knee problem against Everton at the weekend.

Ferguson must now decide whether to field Tomasz Kuszczak or Ben Foster in goal with Foster recently voicing his concern at being relegated to third choice at Old Trafford.
