Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to include Owen Hargreaves in his UEFA Champions League squad despite not knowing when he will be fit.

The Manchester United midfielder underwent groundbreaking surgery on both knees to cure an ongoing tendinitis problem in October 2008.

However 15 months later and the 29-year-old is still yet to make a first-team appearance despite Ferguson pencilling him in for the last two Champions League group games against Besiktas and Wolfsburg before Christmas.

The Red Devils boss revealed that the England international trained well while in Qatar with the rest of the squad last week and will be named once again in the European squad.

"Yes, Owen will probably be in my Champions League squad," he said.

"It will be finalised in the next 10 days and unless something untoward happens I would imagine we will be picking him."

Confident

Once back home from their warm weather training camp, Hargreaves returned to training with the reserves with Ferguson waiting for the former Bayern Munich man to regain full confidence in his knees before he starts full training.

"Owen is still training with the reserves," he added.

"Now it is two days on and one day off and he is preparing to get to the proper levels. He has done two or three sessions with us in the last couple of weeks and did very well in Qatar last week.

"But it is a process and hopefully we will get to the point where he feels confident about playing again."
