Sir Alex Ferguson praised his Manchester United side following their 3-2 victory over AC Milan but was disappointed to concede late on.

Milan took the lead in the UEFA Champions League tie after just three minutes when Ronaldinho's shot deflected off Michael Carrick to wrong-foot goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

United's defenders made some uncharacteristically sloppy mistakes early on before Paul Scholes equalised on 36 minutes.

Ferguson admits he was concerned by the way the match started and needed to give instructions at half-time with the score at 1-1.

"It was a catalogue (of errors) but I think the start they made to the game helped them and made us nervous," he told Sky Sports.

"But once we settled I thought we did okay.

Fantastic

"I said that we had to make better use of the ball and use Wayne Rooney more because I thought he had the measure of them at the back and he was fantastic in the second half.

"The belief grew and getting the goal just before half-time was important."

Rooney scored twice midway through the second period to put firmly United in charge but there was late drama that frustrated Ferguson.

Michael Carrick was sent of for a second bookable offence after Clarence Seedorf had reduced Milan's arrears, a goal which Ferguson concedes leaves the tie delicately poised.

"I thought we were coasting at 3-1 and then there was a carnival at the end of the game," said the manager.

"We were completely in control of the match and that second goal has made it a game that it shouldn't have been."
