Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has set his sights on lifting the Champions League trophy this season.

The Blues recorded a historic double last season, winning both the Premier League and FA Cup for the first time in their history.

But glory in Europe continues to evade the London club, who were knocked out of last season's tournament at the round of 16 stage by eventual winners Inter Milan.

And after returning to the first team fold following two injury-affected seasons, Essien is gunning for glory in Europe's premier club competition.

Essien, a runner-up in 2008 following the penalty defeat to Manchester United, told the club's official website: "As a player, you get the inner feeling that something big is around the corner and I feel the same way I felt last season when we won the double.

"However, I am sure we can go one further and add the big one - the UEFA Champions League trophy - to our collection of trophies. Everyone knows how much winning that will mean to us.

"As a team, we have won every domestic trophy and so it's only natural that we have the hunger for the European trophy."

Essien has every other major domestic honour to his name having won the Carling Cup in 2007 to add to his two Premier League and three FA Cup triumphs.

And while the 27-year-old Ghanaian is chasing glory on the continent, he still has the desire to challenge for the trophies on offer at home.

"That is not to say we don't care about the Premier League, FA Cup or Carling Cup," added Essien.

"We want to win every competition we enter this season and we will do all we can to win them all."
